Are you feeling down? Do you feel like you’re the ‘only girl in the world’ living with diabetes today?

Research shows that women with diabetes are at greater risk for depression than people without diabetes. There are no easy answers about why this is true.

The stress of daily diabetes management can build. You may feel alone or set apart from your friends and family because of all this extra work and/or restrictions.

If you face diabetes complications such as nerve damage, or if you are having trouble keeping your blood sugar levels where you’d like, you may feel like you’re losing control of your diabetes. Even tension between you and your spouse, co-workers and doctors may make you feel frustrated and sad.

If you are depressed and have no energy, chances are you will find such tasks as regular blood sugar testing too much. If you feel so anxious that you can’t think straight, it will be hard to keep up with a good diet. You may not feel like eating at all. Of course, this will affect your blood sugar levels.

Believe it or not, I have found that a little makeup can really help lift spirits in women living with diabetes aka ‘divas.’ For the past eight years, Divabetic has been presenting ‘makeover your diabetes’ outreach events across the country to thousands of women. At these events women enjoy free beauty/fashion services as well as friendly diabetes education.  Our goal is to make you feel beautiful inside and out. It’s common to see women who have walked in tired or slumped over leave our free outreach events feeling renewed and rejuvenated. (Visit http://www.divabetic.org for diva-style outreach event details.)

Let Rihanna and Divabetic help inspire YOU to “GLAM MORE FEAR LESS.” Take a minute to boost your confidence in managing your diabetes by enhancing your beauty. It’s easy. Treat yourself to a massage, wear perfume and/or put on some lipstick before you ‘face’ the world. Choose to sparkle like a diamond today.

Feeling down once in a while is normal. But some people feel a sadness that just won’t go away. Life seems hopeless. Feeling this way most of the day for two weeks or more is a sign of serious depression. If this is a case please seek help from a healthcare professional.
