MrDBC.001The happy healthcare host, Mr. Divabetic goes ‘PINK’ to help raise awareness of the  link between Diabetes and Breast Cancer on Tuesday, July 22, 2014, 6 – 6:30 PM, EST.

Diabetes is linked to an increased risk of developing cancer and now researchers have  found that  people with diabetes not only have an increased risk of developing breast and colon cancer, but an even higher risk of dying from them.

Mr. Divabetic talks with guests, Dr. April Speed and Award-winning Songwriter and Author Mary Sue Englund about the journey ‘from Breast Health to your Best Health.’

Breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer among Black women and in 2010, the CDC reported that breast cancer was the leading cause of cancer death for Black women aged 45–64 years. What was most alarming in this CDC report was that the breast cancer death rate for women aged 45–64 years was 60% higher for Black women than White women

Dr. April Speed provides breast cancer services to women, men and adolescents. Dr. Speed is a member of the American Society of Breast Cancer Surgeons, the Society of Surgical Oncology and the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO.) She was awarded the ASCO National Diversity in Oncology Award in 2009.

Did you know breast cancer tends to appear in Black women at a younger age and in more advanced forms? In fact, Black women are two times more likely to develop triple negative breast cancer, an aggressive form of the disease which has fewer effective treatment options.

Breast cancer support and empowerment is essential to surviving and maintaining optimum health which is why we find Award-winning songwriter and author Mary Sue Englund‘s work to be so powerful.

Mary Sue Englund’s book and CD, ‘I AM A WOMAN’ captures the beautiful breadth of the female experience, with all its clutttered, clouded magic. Striking photographs and wise and sometimes surprising quotes of courageous women from all walks of life fill the pages of this lovely linen-bound coffee table book.

“After seeing the profound effect that the song, ‘I AM A WOMAN’ had on people in concert, I was inspired to write a complete album of what I consider to be “healing songs,” says Mary Sue Englund.  “For those needing encouragement; for those fighting illness or grief, or those craving a little joy. Frankly, I think that is everyone!”

Many women with early breast cancer have no symptoms.  That is why it is so crucial to get screened before symptoms have a chance to appear. The most common sign of breast cancer is a new lump or mass. A painless, hard mass that has irregular edges is more likely to be cancerous, but breast cancers can be tender, soft, or rounded. Other signs may include:

  • Swelling of all or part of the breast
  • Skin irritation or dimpling
  • Pain in the breast or nipple
  • Thickening of the nipple or breast
  • Discharge other than breast milk
